Northern Telecom's Awards for Canadian Studies

From 1983 to 1991, the firm Northern Telecom (which has since become Nortel Networks) contributed significantly to the visibility of Canadian Studies abroad. In 1983, the Northern Telecom International Canadian Studies Award was instituted, to be presented annually to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the development of Canadian Studies including Social Sciences, Humanities, Sciences and interdisciplinary studies through scholarship, teaching, research or inspiration. Nominations could be from any country.

Starting in 1985, a second award was inaugurated, the Northern Telecom Five Continents Award in Canadian Studies, to be presented annually to an individual who has recently made a significant contribution to the development of Canadian Studies outside Canada and the United States. Regardless of citizenship, nominees had to be residents of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australasia or South America. Designed to encourage young scholars, the award was given for a specific achievement such as a major publication or an important contribution on the institutional level.

Each comprised of substantial sum of money and, respectively, of a commemorative gold or silver medal, the prizes were awarded until 1991, by an international jury . The list of recipients follows.
